Everyday Oral Hygiene: Toothbrushes, Toothpastes, Tongue Cleaning and Oil Pulling

9 December Tue, 2025

Good oral health is built at home, not just in the dental chair. As an oral health specialist at Milim Dental Bursa, I see every day how simple habits – the way you brush, the toothpaste you choose, whether you clean your tongue – can make the difference between needing only small fillings and needing complex root canal treatments or extractions.

This article explains:

  1. How to choose the right toothbrush and toothpaste
  2. Why tongue cleaning matters for bad breath
  3. What we know about oil pulling
  4. How these habits support basic treatments like fillings, whitening and gum therapy

Toothbrush Types: Manual or Electric, Soft or Hard?

There is no single “perfect” toothbrush, but there are some general rules:

Soft is safer than hard

  1. A soft or extra-soft brush is usually best for both teeth and gums.
  2. Medium and hard brushes can wear away enamel and injure gum tissue, especially if you press too hard.

Electric vs manual

  1. Electric brushes can be very helpful for people with limited hand skills or motivation.
  2. Many studies show they can remove plaque slightly better than manual brushes when used correctly.
  3. However, a manual brush with excellent technique is still effective.

At Milim Dental Bursa, we often recommend electric toothbrushes for patients with gum disease or many fillings, because they can provide more consistent plaque control.

Toothpaste: More Than Just Flavour

The most important ingredient in most toothpastes is fluoride. Fluoride helps to:

  1. Strengthen enamel
  2. Reverse very early decay
  3. Reduce the risk of new cavities

Depending on your needs, we may suggest:

  1. Standard fluoride toothpaste for most adults
  2. High-fluoride toothpaste for high-risk patients (many cavities, dry mouth, orthodontic treatment)
  3. Sensitive toothpaste for exposed root surfaces or sensitivity after whitening
  4. Gum-care toothpaste for patients with gingivitis or periodontitis

“Whitening” toothpastes mainly work by removing surface stains; they do not bleach the tooth from the inside like professional teeth whitening.

How to Brush Effectively

Most adults in Bursa brush twice a day, but many still develop cavities and gum disease. Technique matters.

Key tips we teach at Milim Dental:

  1. Brush for two full minutes, morning and night
  2. Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste (for adults)
  3. Place the bristles at a 45° angle towards the gum line
  4. Use small, gentle circular motions, not hard scrubbing
  5. Brush all surfaces: outer, inner and chewing surfaces
  6. Spit out the foam but do not rinse heavily with water – this leaves some fluoride on the teeth

Combined with regular cleanings and fillings when needed, proper brushing protects you from more serious treatments like root canal.

Tongue Cleaning and Bad Breath

The tongue often holds more bacteria than the teeth. These bacteria can produce volatile sulfur compounds, which are a major cause of bad breath (halitosis).

Tongue cleaning can be done with:

  1. A dedicated tongue scraper
  2. The back of some toothbrush heads
  3. A soft toothbrush (gently brushing the tongue)

We recommend:

  1. Cleaning the tongue once daily, usually in the evening
  2. Avoiding aggressive scraping that causes gagging or injury

At Milim Dental Bursa, tongue cleaning is part of our standard advice for patients who complain of bad breath, along with checking for gum disease, cavities and sinus issues.

Oil Pulling: Helpful or Hype?

Oil pulling (swishing oil in the mouth for several minutes) is a traditional practice in some cultures and has become popular online as a “natural” method to detoxify the mouth.

From a modern dental perspective:

  1. Swishing any liquid in the mouth can remove some debris simply by mechanical action.
  2. Oil pulling does not replace brushing with fluoride toothpaste or cleaning between teeth.
  3. It should never be used instead of professional treatment for cavities, gum disease, infections or root canal needs.

If you like oil pulling as an additional ritual and it does not make you delay real treatment, it is usually harmless. However, your main protective habits must remain:

  1. Brushing
  2. Interdental cleaning
  3. Tongue cleaning
  4. Regular dental visits

How Oral Hygiene Affects Fillings, Whitening and Gum Treatments

Your daily habits strongly influence how long your dental work lasts.

Fillings and Root Canal Treated Teeth

  1. Poor brushing and flossing can lead to cavities forming around the edges of fillings.
  2. Plaque and tartar can also irritate the gums around these teeth, causing inflammation and bad breath.

Teeth Whitening

  1. After professional whitening, good hygiene helps maintain the result longer.
  2. Smoking, coloured drinks and poor cleaning will stain the teeth again more quickly.

Gum Disease Treatments

  1. Scaling, root planing and other professional procedures can reduce pockets and bleeding.
  2. Without excellent home care afterwards, gums will quickly worsen again.

At Milim Dental Bursa, we always combine professional treatment with personalised hygiene coaching, so you know exactly how to care for your teeth, gums and restorations at home.

Putting It All Together: A Simple Daily Routine

Here is a practical routine most adults can follow:

Morning:

  1. Brush teeth for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Clean tongue gently.
  3. Rinse with water (optional) or a mouthwash recommended by your dentist if needed.

Evening:

  1. Clean between teeth (floss or interdental brushes).
  2. Brush teeth for 2 minutes.
  3. Clean tongue.
  4. If you use a special fluoride gel or high-fluoride toothpaste, apply it at night.

Optional: Oil pulling can be done before brushing if you enjoy it, but it is not essential.

Final Thoughts

Your toothbrush, toothpaste, tongue cleaning and other habits may seem simple, but they are powerful tools for preventing tooth decay, avoiding unnecessary root canal treatments, supporting whitening results and keeping your gums healthy.

At Milim Dental Bursa, our role is to diagnose, treat and guide – but you are the main protector of your own mouth. With consistent daily care and regular professional support, you can keep your teeth strong, your breath fresh and your smile confident for many years.
